Anonymous asked: I was so excited to go to U of T until I started hearing so many people saying how miserable I'll be because it's so difficult and everyone's an elitist and that the school is full of classists and that there's no way I'll get good grades while being happy and having good relationships with friends. I'm so scared to go now and I wish I weren't but I am... Why does everyone say U of T is a school for the miserable?

Well you should be excited for U of T, because in my honest opinion U of T is exciting! I won’t lie to you, U of T is difficult, but not everyone is an elitist. I’m certainly not. So let’s chuck that notion straight into the garbage. However, it would be unfair to downplay the high academic quality that is mostly taught throughout the school, we’re not rated so highly in the world rankings for nothing. But I don’t go around parading that “oh we’re number 17 in the world” or something silly like that.

It is not impossible to get good grades. I got great grades this year, and though I had good years and bad years, I had a first year message me earlier that they got a 4.0 GPA this year. You certainly have to work hard for your grades, but what’s life without challenge? Your first university at any university requires you to adjust and to see how much you can have of everything in life until you find the perfect balance of what you want out of life. You’re in a new chapter, life’s not like high school anymore, and it won’t be ever again.

U of T is difficult because it really makes you work for you grades. Your profs know that you were smart enough to get into here, so they won’t accept bullshit on exams or essays. I found that U of T was a good wake up call for the profession I wanted to be in, and I hope it will be for you too.

Does this answer your question? Let me know if it doesn’t and I’ll try to answer it better.

athefreckle asked: Hey Blurtygirl! I just remembered you're going to law school in Britain, correct? Where? That's what I've been wanting to do after undergrad school for a while now. I'm pretty sure we're actually the same person, because VicOne and spec in IR and minor in a foreign language and law school and such? anyhow, I thought that was cool. :)

Hey there, ducky! :)

As of right now, yes, I have accepted a British law school (still waiting to hear from some Canadian schools). I plan to go to the University of Bristol.  Haha, we do sound like very similar people! I did do Vic One Pearson Stream (Blue) and specialised in IR and minored in French as a Second Language and now I’m off to law school.

It is cool! I’m glad to know I’m not the only person going along this path, cause I think it’s a pretty nifty path :) Do you know what kind of law you would be interested in studying?

I feel old BUT I was in New One, and luckily for you out of the three streams offered, did New One’s Travelling Words and it was amazing on so many levels. The prof, the people. If you have any more questions shoot!

You are not old at all! Stop that! How do you think that makes me feel? :P But I’m glad we’re all one big happy family here :)

Anonymous asked: What do you think the "vibe" of Woodsworth and Univeristy College are? I was admitted into Woodsworth college but I hear it's all commerce/math kids and I'm going into humanities in drama, so I'm really scared about being the odd one out if I go there for residence, but UC has also offered me a place in residence and that's where most drama courses are so that might make more sense? Is it weird to live in a different college than the one you're in? I'm so torn :(

What do I think of the “vibe” of Woodsworth and UC? Hmm, these are not easy questions to answer because I haven’t spent heaps of time at either college for college-specific activities but rather I’ve had classes there.

I do know that Woodsworth has a bunch of commerce students because it’s right near the Rotman Commerce building, but don’t know about the math students.

I also didn’t know that most drama courses are held in UC, so you’re teaching me something new today! :P

Here’s my thing, I attended Trinity college partially because it sponsored the IR program. Though maybe a total of 5 classes of mine were all clustered on Trinity property, my classes were spread all over campus. But in addition to IR students Trinity had tons of students from all sorts of fields. I had math specialists, art history, astrophysics and countless other friends studying different things.

You will make friends in your classes that study the same thing as you, not to worry my ducky. Just know that if you live in a different college than the one you’re in, it will become increasingly more difficult to involve yourself in their college activities and personality. Usually the one you live in is the one you absorb the most.

I don’t want to tell you to choose one college over the other, you just need to decide whether you’d feel more comfortable being a big fish in a small pond or vice versa. Everyone’s opinion on this is different. But I know you’ll make the right decision for you and that’s all that matters.

To help you, I suggest you type the college’s name in my search bar such as “Woodsworth College” and “University College” to learn more about them.

I hope this helps and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!

What happens if you flip gendered book covers?

You are informed about a book’s perceived quality through a number of ways. Probably the biggest is the cover.

And the simple fact of the matter is, if you are a female author, you are much more likely to get the package that suggests the book is of a lower perceived quality. Because it’s “girly,” which is somehow inherently different and easier on the palate. A man and a woman can write books about the same subject matter, at the same level of quality, and that woman is simple more likely to get the soft-sell cover with the warm glow and the feeling of smooth jazz blowing off of it.

This idea that there are “girl books” and “boy books” and “chick lit” and “whatever is the guy equivalent of chick lit”* gives credit to absolutely no one, especially not the boys who will happily read stories by women, about women. As a lover of books and someone who supports readers and writers of both sexes, I would love a world in which books are freed from some of these constraints. Click here to read more about the perceived differences between ‘girl’ and ‘boy’ books.

This is a pretty interesting experiment from author Maureen Johnson.

I read this earlier today. Really, really worth looking at and thinking about. There’s a whole gallery of them.

Anonymous asked: blurtygirl, how hard would you consider it to get into law school at uoft? I'm thinking of doing it, but I'm not sure if I have the discipline and self control needed for it, and I'd like to ask for your personal learning regime if you'd be willing to share?

Hey there, ducky :)

It’s certainly not easy at all. They require extremely high GPA and LSAT marks as well as an extensive extra-curricular list with one heck of a personal statement. I can safely tell you I didn’t have a chance in hell to get in with my marks, although I would have done nearly anything to go.

A lot of it has to do with self discipline and self control which I had in my third and fourth years. My second year was just plain bad and first year could have been great minus two marks. There are things that you also just can’t plan for like family and personal life stuff.

But what did I do? I kept myself busy. As long as I had work or school work to do, I didn’t have time for too many social activities unless I absolutely needed the break. I took courses I was really interested in and I found study buddies that were friends but great academic partners first. When you find people to study with (don’t let this group get bigger than 4 people) you keep yourself motivated. I also find studying in libraries also motivates me because there’s no fridge to run to when times get tough lol.

Is this what you were looking for? Let me know if I didn’t answer your question and I’ll try to better answer it.

crysmilecry asked: Hi! I somehow got accepted into my preferred streams in both UC One and New One and I don't know which to take. I've looked in the Anti-Calendar, but couldn't find New One there. What are your impressions, if any, of UC One's Sex in the city and New One's Travelling Words? New question: I'm applying for transfer credit, because U of T told me to do so, and it says that my application won't be processed until I have sent them all supporting documents, but not which documents they want. Any ideas?

Hey there, ducky! Congrats on getting into both preferred streams of the college one programs you applied to! That’s no small feat at all!!

You won’t find New One there because it’s a new program so you know just about as much as I do regarding the course. All impressions I have on UC one can be found here. I’m going to open this question to students who have taken either New One or UC One to see if they could answer both of these questions for you. I honestly think they both look like stunning courses and would just take the plunge for whatever you gravitate more toward.

Is this a transfer credit from IB or from your other university? I definitely know with IB I needed to fill out a form and mail it to the IB Headquarters in New York and they had to send information to U of T. I would speak to the academic institution you attended that gave you the credits and ask them as well as your registrar for your college to see what documents you need. Each institution will need slightly different documents so I don’t know if IB info will apply to you, you know?

I hope this helps and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!
